Research built for business decisions

The Lab runs professional and academic research on the questions operators actually face. We scope the question, design the method, run the study, structure the data and interpret what it means for the decision in front of you.

Most business research answers the question that was easy to ask. We start by rewriting the question until it is worth answering, then choose the method that can actually settle it.

How we work

Six steps from question to decision

01
Scope the question
We establish what decision the research has to serve, what would count as an answer, and what the answer is worth. Studies that cannot change a decision are stopped here.
02
Design the method
Qualitative, quantitative or mixed, chosen against the question rather than habit. Sampling, instruments and analysis plan are agreed before any fieldwork starts.
03
Run the study
Depth interviews, focus groups, surveys, behavioural and transactional data. Protocols are written so a second researcher would reach the same reading of the same transcript.
04
Structure the data
Coding frames, variable definitions and cleaning rules documented in full. What was excluded and why is part of the deliverable, not a footnote.
05
Interpret the result
Findings are separated into what the data shows, what it suggests and what remains unknown. Confidence is stated, not implied.
06
Apply it
The result lands in your operating model: a changed decision rule, a revised segment, a new measurement. Research that stops at the report is unfinished work.

Instruments

Proprietary methods, standard rigour

Depth interviews
Structured guides built from the decision, not from a topic list. Laddering and critical-incident techniques to reach reasons rather than opinions.
Focus groups
Moderation designed against groupthink: independent responses captured before discussion, dissent actively surfaced and recorded.
Survey design
Instruments tested for order effects and leading construction before fielding. Sample frames documented so the reader can judge generalisability.
Growth Operating Maturity Model
Our own assessment frame across strategy, loops, data, automation and governance. Used to place a business and to compare across a portfolio.
Coding and data structuring
Coding frames with inter-rater checks. Variable definitions, cleaning rules and exclusions written down and handed over with the result.
Impact designs
Baselines, control comparisons and attribution logic agreed before the intervention, so the measurement survives scrutiny afterwards.
Bring us a question you cannot settle internally
Tell us what decision is waiting on evidence. We will say whether research can settle it, which method would be honest, and what it would take.
Step one
Send the question and the decision behind it through the contact form.
Step two
A short call to establish what would count as an answer and what it is worth.
Step three
A written proposal with method, timeline and cost, or an honest reason to stop.
